my concern is that i want to avoid falling into the trope of being a black designer who’s expected to make work about “the black experience” or race. it feels like there’s this assumption that black designers, artists, and creatives have to center their work around their identity, and i want to push back against that. at the same time, i still think it’s important to talk about this expectation and how it shapes the way our work is seen. i am more than just my experience.
